Ibrahim – The Mosaic Khalla

Mosaic Artisan

The “khalla” or finisher has overall responsibility for the zellige tile cutting. Each tile is roughly cut to shape by the “naqqash” or cutters using a sharp double ended . Ibrahim trims each tiny tile to the required shape, before passing them to the maâlems, who build the design.

He has spent years perfecting the art of zellige, Morocco’s intricate mosaic tilework. Trained in Marrakesh from a young age by his Grandfather, a master craftsman, he learned to cut with the precision of a jeweller, transforming simple clay into dazzling tables and fountains. His steady hands and patient eye give each piece its balance and beauty. He hopes to become a maâlem and assemble each tiny hand-chiseled tile into its final design.

When he’s not at work, Ibrahim can be found playing football with his brothers in the streets near his home. His favorite meal is a classic Moroccan dish—slow-cooked lamb with prunes, sprinkled with sesame and almonds—a taste of comfort that reminds him of family, celebration, and home.
