Home lighting is one of the most fundamental elements that helps make your house into a home but it is often an aspect that is underestimated.

The key to choosing light fittings is to select the right pieces for the right room. Lighting fixtures have two primary purposes, decorative and functional, so first you need to decide what your lighting goals are. Lighting can set the mood of a room – not just by the light it gives off and the mood it sets but by the actual light fixtures

Direct functional lighting provides overall lighting of a space and focused light for work spaces. Ambient or indirect lighting is used for atmosphere, creating a focal point, or Illuminating special objects or architectural details.

Each room in your home should have a mood, or moods, that you want to set, as well as a function you want your lighting to serve . Once chosen you can begin to choose lighting options.

As an example the kitchen is often the busiest part of the house. Not only are your meals prepared there, but your family often gather here as well. Sufficient and adequate lighting is necessary for preparing meals, children’s homework and reading the paper. For this you need plenty of light. But turn off those bright lights and turn on low lamps around your dining area and a chill out area immediately appears. The washing up and unfinished homework recede into the background.

Glass Lights

– Lights with heavily coloured glass create a wonderful glow but don’t give off much light

– Clear glass provides the most light

– Smoked white glass or texted glass provide plenty of light with a softer texture

Hide Lights

– Natural skins provide the most light

– Lamps covered in natural skin with some colour provide more light than heavily coloured lights.

– Heavily coloured lights provide low atmospheric lighting.

Metal Lights

– Filigree lights with cut out patterns create wonderful designs of light and shadow on surrounding surfaces.

– Large cut outs, or filigree metal combined with glass, provide more light than small cut outs.

General

– Lights with open bottoms or tops provide more light than completely closed lights.

– Dimmer switches are extremely useful in changing the atmosphere of a lighting scheme. I have them everywhere from the bathroom to the dining room.

– In large lights you can always add more than one light bulb to create extra light.

– Lights can be grouped together to a dramatic display, so as in a row over a dining table, or  as a set cascading in height.

– Don’t forget about candles, the flickering light that they create adds ambiance to any space. It’s also great for hiding dust and wrinkles!
